The Church of Santa Maria

What we see now is the jewel of the complex. Although there were probably earlier buildings, it was in the will of Mir Geribert, from 1060, where the church of Santa Maria ( «ad Sanctam Mariam de Castro sancti Martini ») is mentioned for the first time. However, the current church was built in the 12th century and was consecrated by the Bishop of Vic, Guillem de Tavertet, in 1204. Over the centuries, the church has undergone various reforms such as the construction of the rectory, the eight-sided bell tower, the portal on the west side or the baroque and neoclassical chapels of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The reform made by Josep Puig i Cadafalch, in 1906, restored the Romanesque elements and returned the church to its almost original state. These works were resumed in 2010 and allowed the demolition of modern buildings to give access to the Torre Llombarda, the complex’s oldest tower. Many are the artistic treasures we find inside, although during the Civil War, a large number of liturgical and artistic objects disappeared
