Reconstruction of the castle
The different historical events of the 19th and 20th centuries left the monument in a very poor state of repair, to the great concern of the people of Sant Martí Sarroca. In 1963 work began on the castle, but it was not until a year later, in 1964, that the reconstruction work began under the direction of the architect Camil Pallàs, of the Monument Conservation Service of the Barcelona Provincial Council, and the builder Pedro Canals, with the valuable help of the entire population of the town, headed by Pepet Teixidor and Lluís Pujadó.
The reconstruction was based on the elements found during the cleaning and clearance work, on the structures that were still standing and on the surviving photographs. It was possible to rebuild the roofs, which had completely disappeared, thanks to the profiles preserved in the various walls of the building. And, according to some authors, the neo-Gothic windows were inspired by those found in the Abbey of Poblet.
The work took place over two decades and was carried out in several phases: firstly, work was carried out on the parade ground and the north side of the building; then the rooms on the west and east sides. And finally, after 1980, the south side was rebuilt, the point where they are currently located.
