Farming up to the 19th century

Agriculture and the products derived from it constituted the main economic activity from the very moment of origin of the town. Indeed, the current landscape is the result of centuries of manual labour in the various agricultural tasks.

Up to the 19th century, the main crops grown in the municipality were cereals, as they took advantage of the flat areas; and, to a lesser extent, vines, olives and irrigated crops. Flour mills, located near the river, were also abundant in the area. The improvements introduced in crop growing during the 18th century gradually transformed the agrarian landscape and cereal crops gradually gave way to vineyards for wine production. The use of animal power, with mules replacing oxen, made it possible to plough the land better and to speed up work in the fields. In the mid-19th century, the planting of vines was of primary importance.
