The Monumental Complex on the hill of la Roca

The Castell dels Santmartí and the Church of Santa Maria rise majestically at the top of the hill of La Roca to form a monumental complex of medieval origin, protected by wall locks and natural defences making it impregnable in the eyes of enemies. A strategic point for controlling the land that both Iberians and Romans might have occupied. It will be here where the first population will grow that will last until the 19th century, as it is the castle settlement dedicated to Sant Martí in documents from the 11th century, which gives the town its name. Conflicts such as the Carlist Wars or the ecclesiastical confiscations led to a gradual abandonment of the summit and occupation of the plain. Today this is the main centre of the town of Sant Martí Sarroca. Due to its great value as heritage, the complex has been listed as a Cultural Asset of National Interest (BCIN).
