The transformation of the countryside in the 20th century

The introduction of the American vine and the end of the phylloxera crisis led to the return of vine production as the main agricultural product at the beginning of the 20th century. The growing of cereals and the introduction of olive and fruit trees also increased. In the 1920s, the main products found in Sant Martí Sarroca were wine, oil, pulses and grain.

The Civil War led to a significant drop in wine production to the benefit of cereals, but the end of the conflict and the gradual economic improvement restored the predominance of the wine sector, despite the boost in the planting of more fruit trees and melon plants. In the late 20th century, the land used for wine production exceeded 50% of the total farmed area. Macabeo, Xarel·lo and Parellada are the most common varieties grown.
